A Glimpse into Paradise – Bardiya in Frames

🌿 A Brief History & Significance of Bardiya National Park

Bardiya National Park, established in 1988, is Nepal’s largest undisturbed wilderness area, covering 968 sq. km. Originally a hunting reserve in the 1960s, it was later declared a wildlife reserve in 1976 before gaining national park status. Located in Nepal’s Terai region, it was created to protect endangered species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, One-Horned Rhino, Wild Elephants, and even Gangetic (River) Dolphins!

The park is home to over 50 species of mammals, 400+ bird species, and diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense sal forests and grasslands to riverine habitats. It also has deep cultural ties to the indigenous Tharu community, who have lived harmoniously with the jungle for centuries.

Today, Bardiya National Park is one of the best places in Asia for tiger tracking and immersive wildlife experiences!

Essential Tips for Visiting Bardiya National Park

✅ Best Time to Visit – The ideal months are October to April, when wildlife sightings are at their peak. Summers can be hot (35-40°C / 95-104°F), while winter mornings and evenings can get chilly (10-20°C / 50-68°F), so pack accordingly.

Airport & Vehicle Pick-Up Service – If you arrive in Nepalgunj, whether by plane or vehicle, we can arrange a pickup service for a smooth transfer to Bardiya National Park. The distance from Nepalgunj to Bardiya National Park is approximately 90 kms (53 miles), and the journey takes around 2 hours by road. Let us know your arrival details in advance, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Wear Practical Clothing – Lightweight and breathable clothing is best for hot weather, and cotton is a good choice. Pack warm layers for chilly mornings and evenings, especially in winter. A rainproof jacket or poncho is essential, as Bardiya experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are recommended for safaris, while sandals or flip-flops are great for relaxing at the lodge or near water bodies.

Wildlife Safaris & Exploration – The best times to spot tigers, rhinos, and elephants are early mornings and late afternoons. Staying quiet increases your chances of seeing elusive animals like leopards and sloth bears.

Sun & Insect Protection – Bring sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong sun. Insect repellent is essential to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away.

Must-Have Travel Essentials:

  • Lunch & Water Provided – During jungle safaris, we provide lunch and bottled water during rest breaks to keep you energized.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – While we provide lunch and bottled water, carrying a reusable bottle or hydration system is useful for other activities.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp – A must-have for night use, especially for evening walks or early morning adventures.
  • Camera & Extra Memory Cards – Capture Bardiya’s stunning wildlife and landscapes without worrying about storage.
  • Field Guidebook or Wildlife App – Enhance your experience by identifying and learning about the animals and birds you encounter.

Cash & Connectivity – ATMs may not be readily available near the park, so it’s best to carry Nepalese Rupees for expenses like food, local purchases, and tips.

I had an amazing stay with Krishna and his lovely family. As a guide, Krishna went out of his way to ensure that I had the best experience during the jungle walk and jungle safari, and adjusted to my adventure level. During my trip, I saw five rhinos and one tiger. The cottage is modest but has all the essentials, amazing location, and fantastic service. It was a memorable trip!

It's a new hotel which is manged by a young guide, Krishna who has been in this business since he was a teenager. The price is unbelievable! And the cottages are so comfy and well-equiped. They serve a delicious food. And the location is just perfect. Across the river, and the whole hotel is so green. As a birdwatcher I could sit there the whole day and enjoy watching birds come and go.

The huts are simple but clean and with good beds. Bathroom also very simple but don't smell and with sitting toilets. The lodge's set-up is spacious with a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. WLAN in the huts depends on number of guests 2-8 Mbit in our hut, a bit faster in the restaurant. Staff very friendly!

We had a very pleasant stay at the Namaste Bardiya Resort. Our accommodation was simple, clean, and comfortable. The dal-bhat we had for dinner was good, and the packed lunch we got for our jungle walk was particularly tasty. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, as were the resort staff and owners, with whom we enjoyed a nice post-dinner conversation around a wood fire outside. Will be back in the future!
